چکیده

This work describes the first method to determine the tropical tropospheric ozone column directly from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) space-borne instrument based on the physical differences in ozonecolumn detection as a function of its scan-angle geometry. Comparisons to tropical ozonesonde observations suggest the accuracy of these retrievals is ;20%. Tropospheric ozone derived from this scan-angle method (SAM) exhibits a broad enhancement over South America, the southern Atlantic Ocean, and western South Africa and a minimum over the central Pacific Ocean in September–October. An ozone enhancement in equatorial North Africa is seen in March, the northern burning season. This ozone abundance is not detected by other retrieval methods. The magnitude of the ozone enhancement south of the equator is greater than the enhancement north of the equator. Abnormally high tropospheric ozone occurs over the western Pacific Ocean during the El Niño season when the ozone amounts are as high as those over Africa.

Comparison of scan-angle method and convective cloud differential method in retrieving tropospheric ozone from TOMS.

Tropospheric ozone, derived from the Scan-Angle Method (SAM) and the Convective Cloud Differential (CCD) method, exhibits a noticeable abundance over the South Atlantic, where it is associated with biomass-burning in the austral spring. This feature is also seen in the distribution of carbon monoxide observed from Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT). In the boreal burning seas...

Tropospheric ozone at tropical and middle latitudes derived from TOMS/MLS residual: Comparison with a global model

[1] The tropospheric ozone residual method is used to derive zonal maps of tropospheric column ozone using concurrent measurements of total column ozone from Nimbus 7 and Earth Probe (EP) Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and stratospheric column ozone from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) instrument on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). Our study shows that the zonal variabi...

Tropical tropospheric ozone derived using Clear-Cloudy Pairs (CCP) of TOMS measurements

Using TOMS total-ozone measurements over high-altitude cloud locations and nearby paired clear locations, we describe the Clear-Cloudy Pairs (CCP) method for deriving tropical tropospheric ozone. The high-altitude clouds are identified by measured 380 nm reflectivities greater than 80% and Temperature Humidity InfraRed (THIR) measured cloud-top pressures less than 200 hPa. To account for locati...

Interpretation of TOMS observations of tropical tropospheric ozone with a global model and in situ observations

[1] We interpret the distribution of tropical tropospheric ozone columns (TTOCs) from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) by using a global three-dimensional model of tropospheric chemistry (GEOS-CHEM) and additional information from in situ observations. The GEOS-CHEM TTOCs capture 44% of the variance of monthly mean TOMS TTOCs from the convective cloud differential method (CCD) with n...
